Duncan Goodhew kick-starts centenary celebrations
Wednesday, 14 July 2010 14:34

The Tonbridge Swimming Pool centenary pool party got off to a great start on Saturday when Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew MBE launched the celebrations.

Duncan kick-started the fun and games with a host of family relay races in the outdoor pool, including an umbrella race which took place at the pool’s first swimming gala in 1911.  Over 250 local residents attended the event, which marked 100 years of outdoor swimming in Tonbridge.

During the evening the Mayor of Tonbridge Cllr Sue Murray, attended by Cllr Martin Coffin and Cllr Maria Heslop, unveiled a commemorative plaque.  The Mayor also presented prizes to the winners of the centenary colouring competition which was open to primary school children in Tonbridge.  First prize went to Isabel Williamson (Age 9), runners-up included Rachael Garaty (Age 8), Hannah Rayner (Age 7), Emma Sandys (age 5) and Charlotte Morris (age 5).

The Mayor commented: “This has been a great event for local residents and pool users to come together and celebrate 100 years of outdoor swimming in Tonbridge. Tonbridge Swimming Pool has been held in great affection by generations of people and continues to be used by swimmers of all ages and abilities”.
